The underlying principle of Feng Shui is to live in harmony with your environment so that the energy works for you instead of against you.
According to Feng Shui, each of us has our own personal direction that is our "best" direction. If you are facing your best direction, you will work more efficiently, for longer hours and be happier. You are happier even in a restaurant if facing your best direction. (When I designed and built my house I did it so that I was often facing my best direction.)
Here is how you can find your personal direction:
If you were born between January 1 and around February 20, please check the date on which the Chinese New Year for the calendar year of your birth. If you are not born in that window of time, proceed to Step 2.
(But if you were born in that window of time, if you are born in the Chinese New Year before this calendar year, then subtract one from the year of your birth. For instance, if you were born on February 6, 1964 (when the Chinese New Year fell on 13th of February), you should count your birth year as 1963.)
Take the last two digits of your year of birth and add them together. For example, if you were born in 1974, add 7 + 4 = 11. If the result is greater than 9, then add those two digits together to make one number example 1 + 1 = 2.
If you are a male, subtract this answer from 10, for example 10 - 2 = 8.
If you are female, add 5 to the number produced in Step 2, example 2 + 5 = 7.
If the number is bigger than 9, then add the digits together again.
If the answer is 5 and you are a male, your special number will be 2.
If you are female and the answer is 5, your personal number will be 8.
See below to see how your personal number gives you the best direction:
